I need to buy an iPhone for my daughter. Is it worth the extra money for the 6s over the 6?

I have a 6s and like it. Never had a 6, though.

If she’s a power user (photo editing, gaming, photography), yes. If she just uses it for social media and messaging, no.

The 6S is akin to holding an iPad next to your head. Even with my man hands, it’s too big, though your mileage may vary. You might also look into the iPhone 5SE. It’s size of an iPhone 5, but it has the guts of the iPhone 6, plus the camera (though the selfie camera doesn’t get an upgrade, and that might be important). You don’t get the 3D touch of the 6 or 6S, but you $ave $ome money. That’s what I’m going to upgrade to in the fall.

No, not really. The 6S features 3D Touch, which I find to be utterly useless, Live Photos, which are just fancy gifs, and 4K video, which isn’t very useful considering the 6S only has a 750p screen.
Unless your daughter is clumsy (the 6S has a stronger body), save some money and get the 6.

6 = Glorified 5. I have one and I suffer from the slowness and lagging of the older chip. That stinks. I also cannot afford to upgrade.
So I say this, if no existing 5 or 6 then go for the “S”. That is a no brainer.
If $ is the issue just remember that a new 6 right now, which is already nearly two years old, will be so outdated in two more years. That is if the phone survives that long.
My $ would be on the 6S.

I went from a 6 to a 6S and honestly don’t really notice anything different. I always forgot the whole 3D Touch thing even exists. Honestly, I’m considering going to the SE when this lease is up, because it’s in the smaller case and might actually fit in my jeans pockets again.

I have a 6S, and I put a Lifeproof battery case on it (130 bucks) - I like the weight and thickness - feels like I’m holding something substantial. As for the phone, it’s a nice upgrade from the 5C I had before. It’s power hungry, but that’s why I bought a phone case that will charge it.

I thought Live Photos was a gimmick until I was looking over some photos I took on a recent trip to Europe. Amazing feature, it captures the sound and the movement and really lets you re-live the experience, especially when you look at it on a laptop or external monitor. In one of my pics at the Eiffel Tower you’ve got people walking around and a father picking up his toddler son and I had an existential moment in which I realized all of these people will live forever in these photos. That kid eventually will grow up and have goals, a family etc. and though he’ll never realize he’s in my “Live Photo” it just added this specialness to the feature for me.
I also took some photos of my younger bro’s graduation a few days ago and to have a live photo of him and his class throwing their hats in the air was actually really cool.

With the 7 dropping in Sept/Oct for the same price as a 6S, I cannot recommend spending money on a 6S. I say get the iPhone SE or wait for the iPhone 7. It’s just too late in the cycle to bother spending full price and I’ll take an SE over a plain 6.

“I need to buy an iPhone for my daughter.”
No you don’t. No kid *needs* an iPhone 6 or 6S.
Of course if you *want* to buy a new iPhone for your daughter, that’s a different story.
If you have lots of money, the 6S has a faster processor and better cameras. It’s worth it if it will be used for gaming, picture/video editing apps and more demanding things like that.
If you’re just scraping by and have to watch every dollar you spend, then no, it isn’t worth it. I would say even the regular iPhone 6 is overkill as far as ‘needs’ go.

I think you have your models confused. 6 and 6s are same size, different features, I think you are confusing these with a 6+ or 6+S

Yes, you are right. It’s the 6 plus that is like holding a tablet to your head. Derp.

I actually have the 6+ S and for me it is smallish, because I had a Nexus 6 before it :D. But, I might go to a 5" phone for my next

I’ve had a 5 for a long time, and I think it’s just the right size. I’ll be going to the SE. Never had anything else but iPhones.

My daughter is 20 and she has been away from us for more than a year on a church mission and we plan to give her a phone when she returns, and an iPhone 6 is what she has requested.
Your last paragraph was exactly the sort of information I needed. Thank you.

Mrs. O.C. has a 5 and I think it’s too small. The keyboard is maddeningly small. IMHO.

Those are good points. I think a 6 can be had in good shape for around $400, while the 6S is closer to $600. I think a 6 with a robust case is where I’ll wind up. Thanks for the input.

Folks are comparing the 6 to the 5s in this space, and we’re getting good service and battery life from the 5s’s.

And one of them, not the thumb, is up right now. JK.
Daughter of O.C. had dainty little carrot fingers. She has her Grummy’s hands. I’ll probably go with the 6, since that’s what she asked for, it’s almost $200 less than the 6s, and she’s no power user.
Comments in this space have been very helpful today.

My mom has a 6 I think and she does well. Personally I have a 6S Plus and love it. I would definitely recommend the plus.

SigOther has the 6 Plus, and a Japanese carrier 6S Plus - I have the 6S. I don’t really see much of a difference in the power consumption for the 3 phones, but then again the Japanese phone doesn’t ring much in the US. Go 6S if there’s a choice - I believe the camera is better.

I've had a 4s, 5s and now 6s. All have been great. One way to look at the S models is that they are generally a refinement of the original.
